Glasgow Taxis to extend sponsorship of university sporting competition with new, four-year deal

GLASGOW’S three universities have secured a new, four-year deal which will see Glasgow Taxis Ltd continue as the title sponsor of the annual inter-varsity competition – The Glasgow Taxis Cup.

Announced at the Emirates Arena Velodrome, the new sponsorship deal, worth £25,000 over the four years, is a great boost to ensure the competition’s ongoing success.

The deal is a significant milestone in the preparations for the 2014 contest, with the Emirates Arena already signed up as the main host venue, along with a number of other Commonwealth Games facilities including Scotstoun and the National Hockey Centre.

Now in its tenth year, the day-long multi-sport event will see athletes from Glasgow, Strathclyde and Glasgow Caledonian represent their universities across 15 disciplines in the quest for bragging rights in the fiercely competitive contest.

This academic year’s competition will take place on Wednesday 19 March 2014 and will feature athletics, basketball, swimming, football, squash, track cycling, volleyball, hockey and rugby within its schedule. Points are allocated to the winner of individual events in order to decide the overall winner on the day.

With the University of Glasgow dominating last year’s competition, its city rivals will be looking to knock them off their perch in what will be the biggest and most exciting Glasgow Taxis Cup to date.

Speaking about the event, Stuart Law, Glasgow University Sports Association (GUSA) president, said: “The Glasgow Taxis Cup is a massive event in the city’s student sporting calendar and all our athletes are training hard to be ready for the main event in March. It is a fantastic opportunity for students to compete at venues like the Emirates Arena which will create a great buzz for both athletes and spectators.

“With so many sports being hosted across a range of different venues, the competition requires a lot organising and support. The Glasgow Taxis sponsorship has been central to the ongoing success and growth of the event and we are delighted they have chosen to extend the partnership for another four years.

Stephen Flynn, vice-chair of Glasgow Taxis Ltd, said: “The Glasgow Taxis Cup is a brilliant concept and it has developed into an extremely popular event for the city’s student population. We are regularly working with student groups on different initiatives so we’re delighted to extend our sponsorship and support for this highly entertaining event.

“Also, with winter quickly closing in, it is important for students to make sure they get home safely after nights out and our involvement with the Glasgow Taxis Cup will provide a great platform to spread this message.”
