CELTIC Music Radio, Scotland’s first station supported by its listeners, will be broadcasting this year’s Celtic Connections, live, for eight hours each day.

The annual winter music festival gets under way this week (January 16) and this is the charity station’s ninth successive year of live coverage.

Once again, Celtic Music Radio is working in partnership with Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU), following a very successful collaboration in 2013.

GCU Audio Technology students will be manning the outside broadcast facilities at Adelaide’s Church to allow Celtic Music Radio to broadcast interviews, live sessions and the famous Danny Kyle Open Stage over the two weeks of the festival.

Starting on Friday January 17, the daily broadcasts from 10.00 am to 6.00 pm allow around 15 students from all four years of the BSc(Hons) Audio Technology with Electronics to gain valuable hands-on experience at the world’s largest Celtic music festival.

Each day, there will be special live guests and sessions by Celtic Connections’ artistes – from local Glasgow singers and songwriter as well as others from all parts of the UK and internationally who have travelled to Glasgow to perform.

Gordon Hotchkiss, programme director for Celtic Music Radio, said: “We are delighted to have the students from Glasgow Caledonian University helping us out again this year.

“Although students, each and everyone has proved to be a pleasure to work with and all act very professionally.

“We’re pleased we are all working together again – I’m sure they will do a terrific job.”

This year’s shows could be heard by millions of extra listeners as Celtic Music Radio will feature on DAB Digital Radio with coverage starting on Thursday, January 9 running through to February 2, the final date of Celtic Connections.

Areas where programmes can be heard on DAB are Ayrshire, Berkshire & North Hampshire, Bristol, Cambridge, Cornwall, Coventry, Essex, Kent, Leicester, Norwich, Nottingham, Peterborough, Plymouth, South East Wales, Sussex Coast, Swindon, West Wiltshire, and Wolverhampton.
