A NORTH-EAST bakery is celebrating a healthy boost of business success after winning a top accolade at local food and drink awards.

Chalmers Bakery, a family-run bakery launched in 1956, has been recognised at this year’s Grampian Food Forum Innovation Awards for its commitment to encouraging healthy eating.

The bakery, which has 15 shops located throughout the North-east, secured The Rowett Institute of Nutrition and Health Award for its new Mediterranean Pie, which offers customers a taste of Greece.

The reduced calorie content pie is baked with vegetable oil and has a 56.7 per cent reduction in fat and a 59.6 per cent reduction in salt.

Inspiration for the new product came from a placement student, who is originally from Greece and worked at the bakery in her fourth year of university.

Chalmers adapted the healthy pie to suit North-east taste buds, which offers customers one of their five-a-day, and is now part of the bakery’s overall vision to reduce fat and sugar throughout their product range.

Director of Chalmers Bakery, Pamela Chalmers, said: “We are all absolutely delighted that our Mediterranean Pie has secured this award.

“The pie is a new addition to our product range, but it is a major part of our on-going commitment to provide healthier options for our customers, as we look to develop new products and improve existing ones to meet changing trends and customer’s desires.

“It is a great achievement and huge boost for the whole team at Chalmers.”

The Mediterranean Pie is part of Chalmers overall aim to produce healthier products, cutting back on both fat and salt, but without compromising on taste.

The team at Chalmers are continuously trying to improve the nutritional content of products, and are currently trialling various healthier pastries, pies and butteries with customers.

Chalmers Bakery, which is open six days a week, has been supplying the North-east of Scotland with fresh bakery products for over 56 years, including bread, pies and its famous Balmoral Bread.

The firm has 127 employees including nine bakers and three confectioners.

The award-winning Mediterranean Pie officially goes on sale to the public in April.
