Media Release: Shetland’s North Sea connections celebrated at festival this week

Maggie Adamson & Brian Nicholson from Shetland will be appearing at Northern Streams 2014

TWO of Shetland’s top musicians will be entertaining audiences in Edinburgh at the end of this week.

Brian Nicholson and Maggie Adamson have been playing as a duo for around five years at events both here and abroad. Their repertoire includes a variety of different styles of music from traditional Shetland tunes to American rags, Scottish hornpipes and strathspeys and classical pieces.

Fiddler Maggie, whose style has been described as ‘jaw-dropping’, is currently studying at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, while guitarist Brian is a founding member of the folk band, Hom Bru, one of the original line up of Da Fustra Scottish dance band

They will be joining Norway’s dynamic ‘rock and roll’ Storm Weather Shanty Choir, award-winning Kevin Lees, Dave Wood & Noa Shamir (Denmark/Britain); and innovative Swedish musicians Kristin Borgehed and Nathan Bissette at Edinburgh’s Northern Streams 2014 Festival.

Fiona Campbell, festival co-organiser, said: “I’m delighted this year to be able to bring Brian and Maggie to our Northern Streams Festival. Shetland is such an important crossing point of cultures from around the North Sea and beyond, and I’m pleased that we have been able to invite two such fine musicians to demonstrate this richness of traditions and talent from these islands.”

The festival programme includes workshops from Brian and Maggie on Shetland music and accompaniment as well as sea shanties, Swedish songs, Scandinavian folk dancing, a children’s workshop, sharing session and two evening concerts – all at its new festival venue, the Grassmarket Centre, a community social enterprise which helps build skills and confidence in people.
