Media Release: Inverclyde and Ayrshire companies join forces to children’s benefit

men in childcare launch

FOLLOWING its recent, internal survey of Scottish nurseries –  in which 100 per cent of managers agreed that children benefit from strong male role models – Greenock-based Childcare Management Company (CMC) announces it has secured Youth in Partnership World (YIP) as its premium partner in a project designed specifically to address the issue.

Says a spokesperson: “With only two per cent of staff working within the childcare arena currently male, the newly-devised Early Learning and Childcare – ‘All About Men’ Programme was launched today ( Friday 23 May 2014) with the aim of encouraging young men, initially in the East Ayrshire area, to consider childcare as a career.

Working in partnership with Cumnock based YIP World, who have direct access to young males leaving school and may have an interest in careers in the childcare sector, CMC will provide fully-funded Modern Apprenticeship training.

Commencing their Early Learning and Childcare employment with YIP World, the five young men, aged 16-19 year-old, will then participate in a 12-month SVQ Level 3 in Social Services (Children and Young People).

Janice Hendry, of YIP World, notes: “YIP World is delighted to be associated with the Childcare Management Company, who are renound for consistently delivering high standards of quality training for today’s employment market.

“Childcare Management Company is currently providing SVQ assessment Level 5 to four young women employed by YIP World and welcomes the opportunity to contribute to the gender imbalance in the sector and within our organisation.

“As such, we wholeheartedly endorse this innovative Early Learning and Childcare – ‘All About Men’ Programme and look forward to assisting participants achieve qualifications recognised by the care sector.

“It is widely recognised that children and young people benefit from male role models and this is the perfect opportunity to monitor and evaluate this area of research as well as create employment opportunities.”

Mariessa Devlin, MD of Childcare Management Company, says: “We are delighted to form this partnership with YIP and offer a real alternative career option to young men.

“The fact that everyone involved in Early Learning and Childcare agrees that children benefit from a strong male role model comes as no surprise, particularly when some young children have limited access to men in their life.

“Many early years providers and managers also see other potential advantages in employing more male members of staff as there is a view that not only is this something which families want, there is also a strong feeling that an increase in the number of male staff would give their establishments an edge over local competitors, who decide to keep their workforce exclusively female.”

Today’s announcement coincides with Skills Development Scotland’s Scottish Apprenticeship Week (19-23 May).

The Week is designed to highlight the benefits to industry in employing Modern Apprentices, by providing businesses with financial support in return for offering work-based training towards an industry approved qualification.

Skills Development Scotland supports new starts or existing employees under-25 who need training or professional development to upgrade their skills in over-25 industry sectors.
