A FRASERBURGH accountant is adding up a success haul after making a splash in the Scottish Masters Swimming Championships in Aberdeen.

Michael Murray, 42, who works as client manager in the expanding Fraserburgh office of SPB Accountants and Business Advisors, racked up two bronze medals and six personal bests in the 42 to 44 year olds category.

Michael, who was competing as part of a nine-strong team from the Fraserburgh Swimming Club, finished third in the 50 metres freestyle and 50 metres butterfly races, and collected six personal bests in the freestyle and butterfly categories.

Michael, who deals with a wide client base at SBP, including the fishing and farming sectors, charities and various local businesses, joined the swimming club 18 months ago, and trains six days a week, including every morning before work.

He said: ”It is a challenge to fit in my swimming training when the SBP Fraserburgh office is continuing to gain a growing caseload, but I find it helps to prepare me for my day ahead, and gets me in shape for competitions.

“Earlier this year I won two gold medals, two silver and two bronze in the Silver City Blues event at the Westhill pool in Aberdeen, which showed how much I had developed through hard work and tailoring my training to prepare for events.

“That gave me the confidence to go for the Scottish Masters and good preparation paid off with my accomplishments there.”

As well as competing in swimming competitions, Michael also finds time for a range of responsibilities in the community. He is a member of the Fraserburgh Harbour Board committee, treasurer for Fraserburgh Business Association, and chairman of Kessock Park.

He explained: ”As I work and live in Fraserburgh I like to try to put something back by working in these various groups. With my work and other activities, it can be refreshing to take to the pool and put in some dedicated training.

“I know I have to put in the preparation if I want to maintain my swimming progress and, seeing the rewards in the Scottish Masters, it certainly inspires me to keep working hard.

“I’m determined to compete again in next year’s Scottish Masters so I’m mapping out a training schedule to help me to that goal.”

This summer Michael will take part in the Banff Bay open seawater swim – covering the mile from Banff to Macduff – after being part of a team from his swimming club who completed the grueling course in chilly water, without a wetsuit, last year.

SBP Accountants and Business Advisors also has offices in Aberdeen, Peterhead and Banff and offers a range of business and accountancy services including personal and business taxation.

It also has a dedicated business services department, which includes book-keeping, VAT and payroll requirements.
