Media Release: Mackays Hotel first Wick hotel to be awarded AA Rosette

Mackays Restaurant Team - 800x450

MACKAYS HOTEL in Wick is the first hotel in the area to be awarded the prestigious AA Rosette Award in recognition of their outstanding quality of food served in their No.1 Bistro.

Begins a spokesperson: “The AA Rosette Awards were first introduced over 50 years ago as an award system reflecting and recognising the emergence of British hotel cooking as an area of culinary mastery.

“Out of the many thousands of restaurants and hotels across the UK, only around ten per cent are deemed deserving of a standard worthy of one Rosette or above, all of which feature in the official AA Restaurant Guide.”

Murray Lamont, owner of the family run business, commented: “I am absolutely delighted and very proud that our whole kitchen team have been recognised for all their hard work in delivering consistently good food, using exceptional and fresh local produce that showcases the best flavours that Caithness & Sutherland have to offer.

“I’m very proud of Andrew Manson, our head chef, who has been with us since 2006 when he joined us as a chef de partie, and Richard Gunn our sous chef, both of whom have worked hard to develop and enhance their culinary skills to a very high standard.

“This award is testimony to how well Andrew, Richard and the whole kitchen team work together. It is well deserved.”

Mackays Hotel and No.1 Bistro in Wick is already world-famous for being situated on the Shortest Street in the World, Ebenezer Place. However, it is expected that the AA Rosette will place No.1 Bistro firmly onto the map in the burgeoning ‘foodie tourism’ market.

David Whiteford, chair of the North Highland Initiative, commented: “This is a tremendous achievement for a local hotel that has not only stood the test of time, but which demonstrates that you can always strive to do better. Mackays Hotel continues to push its business forward, using fresh local produce and developing exceptional talent, and this AA Rosette Award is well deserved recognition of their efforts.”

Simon Numphus, AA Hotel Services business manager, added: “The achievement of an AA Rosette Award recognises high standards, consistency and precision, serving food prepared with care and with evident selection of fresh, seasonal quality ingredients. Good understanding and use of technical skills are demonstrated in the cooking, with clarity of flavours shining through.

“Our inspector also mentioned that the refurbished bedrooms in Mackays Hotel are attractive with high quality décor, while housekeeping standards create positive impressions throughout the hotel. We congratulate the team at Mackays Hotel on their success.”
