Media Release: Injured skier is selected for World Ski Championships

Charlie 450x450

ONE of the UK’s leading alpine skiers, Charlie Guest, has been selected to join the British team competing at the FIS Alpine World Skiing Championships in Vail, Beaver Creek next month, despite breaking her back last November.

Charlie had her training for the World Championships dramatically cut short when a potentially career-ending crash on the slopes left her with broken vertebrae after hitting a boulder while on a training session with her coach in Sweden. Without the good fortune of having worn a back protector, Charlie’s career may well have been over.

Since the accident, the 20 year-old is well on the road to recovery and working extremely hard to get back to full fitness. Showing her resilience and sporting strength of character, Charlie was back on the slopes by Christmas and now has the World Championships firmly in her sights.

She commented:

“It’s a great feeling to be selected as part of the British team competing at Beaver Creek. This is what I was working towards before the accident, so to still be selected has given me such a boost. It’s only a few weeks away, but I’m more determined than ever to be there and competing. There’s no way I’m ruling it out yet.”

Originally from Perth, Charlie is very aware of how different things could have been if she hadn’t started wearing a back protector, having only worn one twice before her accident. Charlie added:

“I’m very lucky to even be walking let along considering competing at the World Skiing Championships next month after my accident. The back protector is an absolute must for me now. It should be compulsory ski-wear for everyone, regardless of level and ability.”

Charlie has been selected to compete alongside fellow scot and team-mate Alex Tilley in both Slalom and Giant Slalom at the Championships which take place from the 2nd – 15th February 2015 in Vail, Beaver Creek, Colorado.
