FORTH Valley College Student Association president, Lorraine Simpson, won a top award recently at the prestigious NUS Scotland Awards 2015.

Lorraine (24, Stirling) was presented with the winning prize in the ‘Student Officer’ category at an awards ceremony which formed part of the NUS Scotland National Conference which took place in North Berwick on Friday (20 March 2015).

This prestigious award recognises the positive impact that individuals or teams have on their college student community and how effectively they represent the views of Student Association members.

The Student Association had also been short-listed in the ‘Students’ Unions – Colleges’ category and Administrator Lynne McClelland (27, Sauchie) was up for an award in the ‘Staff’ category.

All submissions will now be put forward into the NUS UK Awards 2015.

Dr Ken Thomson, principal for Forth Valley College said:

“We’re thrilled for Lorraine and would like to congratulate her on winning an NUS Scotland Award. This is a fantastic achievement and is testament to her commitment and hard work.

“Students are at the heart of everything we do and the Student Association is an integral part of Forth Valley College.

“Lorraine quickly grasped the importance of her role and has been an excellent ambassador for the student body. She has also driven change within the Student Association and since she started the profile of the Student Association has increased significantly.

“She has also been making an impact at a national level and is well respected throughout the sector. Lorraine and her team should all be very proud of their achievements.”

Jean Duff, Student Services manager at Forth Valley College nominated Lorraine for the award.

She said: “We’re delighted for Lorraine. She has an extremely positive outlook and is an inspiration to others. The Student Association has made a big impact this session and the feedback from learners has been excellent.”

Lorraine Simpson said: “I’m so happy to win the award. It was a totally unexpected, overwhelming moment. This is a really important award as it shows recognition not only for the work I have done, but everything my team at The Student Association has achieved.

“I couldn’t have done it without them and this will only make us strive for more for our students.”
