SCOTTISH Bakers has confirmed that its annual industry conference and Scottish Baker of the Year Awards 2015 presentation will once again take place at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Glasgow on 8th and 9th May.

Says a spokesperson: “This year’s keynote address will be from Lord Digby Jones, former UKTI Minister and UK Skills Ambassador, who will be speaking about how today’s bakery business can unlock its potential.

“Also, Mich Turner, who is the Scottish Baker of the Year Ambassador, will be hosting an exclusive masterclass, focusing on her Raspberry Rose Ombré Cake as well as delivering a session entitled, ‘Confessions of a cake lady’.”

Key speakers include Pete Sidwell, who is designing the menu for the new NHS Scotland coffee shops – which must include healthy products – Martin Lighbody, on how he has been successful in evolving his business at home and abroad; and Paul Grant, formerly of United Biscuits.

We will also hear from the current World Scotch Pie Champion, Linda Hill, and reigning Scottish Baker of the Year, Ashers Bakery from Nairn.

Entertainment comes courtesy of Les McKeown Bay City Rollers who will be taking to the stage on Friday evening.

Continues the spokesperson: “But the highlight of the weekend will be the presentation of the Scottish Baker of the Year 2015 Awards.

“Over 23,000 customers from across Scotland voted for their favourite bakery products across seven categories and on 31st March, 170 bakers delivered 600 of their most popular scones, loaves, savoury items, morning rolls, individual cakes, products made from California Raisins and biscuits for judging by the professionals whose job it is to decide upon the best seven products in the land and the shortlist has been announced.

“Forty-nine bakers have won product awards and the judging has now entered its final phase with submissions being sought for the three new categories in the competition – Craft Baker of the Year, Retail Baker of the Year, or Wholesale Baker of the Year – as well as the ultimate winner, Scottish Baker of the Year.”
