Media Release: Accessing West Lothian’s new mental health and wellbeing information is a piece of cake

All Media Westspace launch l to r Flora Sharp and Gillian Amos

WESTSPACE.ORG.UK, an exciting new mental health and wellbeing website for West Lothian, was launched at the Bathgate Partnership Centre.

The website was developed by Scottish charity Health in Mind in partnership with NHS Lothian and the directory provides information on over 80 services available in West Lothian, fact sheets, self-help guides and news and information on training courses and local events.

Health in Mind Information resource worker, Flora Sharp was responsible for developing the website and she commented:

“One in four people will experience some form of mental health issue in their life* and, for many individuals and their families, it can be a lonely, frightening and worrying time.

“If someone is worried about themselves or a friend or if they are a carer, a health professional or if they simply want to find out more about mental health and wellbeing services in West Lothian, the website will signpost them to what is available and help them to make informed choices.

“The website will enable people to access the information they need at a time and a place of their choosing.”

As well as helping people to make informed choices about treatment and care, Westspace can help someone to explore self-help opportunities as well as maintaining their own positive mental health and wellbeing.

Gillian Amos, senior health promotion specialist, with NHS Lothian Health Promotion, said:

“NHS Lothian is delighted to be working in partnership with Health in Mind to produce such a valuable and easily accessible resource for the community of West Lothian.

“We acknowledge that sometimes it can be difficult for individuals and their families to find out what services and support are available to them locally and this vital resource really goes a long way to fill that gap.”

The website Service Directory contains easily accessible information such as:

  • Contact numbers for anyone needing immediate help
  • A Service Directory highlighting over 80 different, local organisations
  • Fact sheets covering a variety of topics from ‘Advocacy’ to ‘Volunteering’
  • News, Events and Training opportunities
  • Self-help
  • Help for a Friend
  • Recovery
  • Optional e-bulletin.

* NHS Health Scotland – Scotland’s mental health first aid manual
