Ancient Japanese Craft Revived by a Scottish Ad Agency
An elegant origami butterfly crafted from a ten-pound note is taking centre stage in Scottish Opera’s latest advertising campaign. Using the line ‘Catch Madama Butterfly For £10’ the ad aims the opera experience squarely at the next generation of opera lovers.
Ad agency, Newhaven Communications, came up with the idea of creating an origami butterfly from a standard ten-pound note. Says Zane Radcliffe of Newhaven “as with the best advertising ideas, it’s a simple one. It draws upon the link between origami and the Japanese setting of opera Madama Butterfly whilst effortlessly communicating the price incentive”. Halcyon Nicoll and Sarah McIntyre were the origami artists tasked with creating the butterfly.
However, due to the rectangular proportions, using an actual ten-pound note to create the butterfly wasn’t going to be easy. Graphic designer Joe Kerrigan was tasked with the challenge of bringing the ad agency’s vision to life through a process known as ‘retouching’. Says Lynsey Taylor of Scottish Opera “it’s such an elegant piece of work, we’re delighted”.
Launched at the beginning of April, the advertisements are featuring in newspapers, online and on outdoor ad sites and across Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen. Madama Butterly is playing currently in Glasgow and continues with dates in May before touring to Stoke-on-Trent before returning to Edinburgh and Aberdeen in June.
