Notes to Editor
Torosay castle is a 150 yr old Scottish baronial Castle.
The castle is connected to its own narrow gauge steam railway from the ferry pier.
Set in magnificent and unique gardens and grounds. Due to its location in the centre of the gulf stream, Torosay is able to cultivate some plants and flowers not seen anywhere else in the UK
Completed in 1858, the castle is spectacular example of one of the leading Scottish architects of his time (other examples are Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, Fettes College and The Bank of Scotland HQ.
The gardens are a result of generations of work and include formal terraced gardens adjacent to the castle complete with the now famous 19 marble statues by Antonio Bonazza (1698-1763) imported from Northern Italy.
Other gardens include a Japanese garden overlooking the Sound of Mull, formal rockery, the Walled garden and the only cultivated Chilean forest outside South America.
Torosay castle and gardens is run by Chris and Sarah James, who live on site. They are descended from Arbuthnot Charles Guthrie (1825-97), co founder of a small merchant bank called Chalmers, Guthrie of Dundee and London. Arbuthnot purchased the property in 1865 and it has been in the family ever since.
Torosay will be 150 years old this year. There will be a full and diverse
range of events to mark this momentous occasion.
