Merchant Square to Host STV Local Heroes Craft Fair

Merchant Square to Host STV Local Heroes Craft Fair

Merchant Square in Merchant City, the heart of the city’s cultural, fashion and food quarter, is to host the first ever STV Local Heroes Craft Fair on the weekend of Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th September.

All proceeds raised will be donated directly to the STV Appeal 2011, supporting Scotland’s Children.

Jenni Morrison, of Merchant Square, said: “We’re delighted to help play an active part in helping Scotland’s children combat poverty; and the response from our crafters has been incredible. Already we are on target to raise over £2000 for this worthy cause – and with many more crafters keen to get involved, we’re sure that our first STV Local Heroes Craft Fair is sure to be a great family occasion.

“Come round to the Square on Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th September and in-between browsing a broad selection of arts and crafts, you can relax in the Square’s fabulous selection of restaurants and cafes, all set within a covered and heated Victorian courtyard – so it doesn’t matter if it rains!”

Jonathan Rennie, regional editor at STV Local, said: “The STV Appeal 2011 has been launched to raise money for Scotland’s most-at-risk children who deal with poverty on a daily basis. We’re delighted that Merchant Square has lent its full support with the launch of this craft fair which, as well as being a fun day out for all the family, will raise thousands of pounds for such a worthy cause.

“One in four children in Scotland live in poverty. This is Scotland’s secret shame and the reason why STV and The Hunter Foundation have joined together to try and do something about it.”

The weekly craft fair in Merchant Square specialises in hand-crafted items that simply cannot be found anywhere else. On offer are one-off, specially made pieces and quality products including: cards; jewellery; paintings; aromatherapy products; home-made jams and chutneys; photography and fashion accessories.

The Merchant Square is Glasgow’s most vibrant venue for a worldwide selection of cafes, bars and restaurants, including: Bar Square; Beer Café; Sizzlers Steakhouse & Ocean Grill; Fanelli’s; Metropolitan; Boudoir Wine Bar; Arisaig; O’Neill’s and Mercado.

Located on Candleriggs, Merchant Square, once part of the old Glasgow Fruit Market, is imbued with the history of the area’s dominating Victorian architecture, although today this sense of history blends seamlessly with the distinctly cosmopolitan ambiance that pervades the surrounding cobbled streets that bring the outside in.
