The Glasgow School of Art

Region : All

Students at The Glasgow School of Art today (Friday, 20 June) graduated from their respective disciplines at Bute Hall, the University of Glasgow with key award winners announced at the ceremony including Radiohead video remix sensation James Houston.

James Houston, from Visual Communications, has won the Newbery Medal and The Bram Stoker Award for his Degree Show work which included the four-minute film Big Ideas (Don’t Get Any). This award is presented to the top final year student. His emotive film, featuring obsolete computer parts playing Radiohead’s song Nude, has become the latest You Tube sensation after receiving plaudits from the band themselves, academics, music and technology fans. Winners of the Chairman’s Medal which was also announced at the ceremony were Nicholas Crawford from Architecture (Mackintosh School of Architecture), Angharad Davies from Painting and Printmaking (Fine Art) and Leah Black from Silversmithing and Jewellery (Design).

A number of new awards have been announced this year. These included the inauguration of the Kennett Prize for Innovation in Product Design created by Teknek who sponsored the Product Design Engineering show. This was awarded to the student judged to have the most innovative product design in the show. The award, named after the founder and executive chairman of Teknek Jonathan Kennett, will become an annual prize to inspire PDE students to apply their creative skills in industry. Adrian Choong was awarded the prize for his lightbrush, a toothbrush which uses photodynamic therapy technology to destroy bacteria which can lead to gum disease.

Another new award, the Steven Campbell Hunt Medal, was awarded to Claire Paterson from Painting and Printmaking. The award, which was open to Fine Art students, was presented for Most Poetic Creativity of the year. The selection panel included Steven’s wife Carol Campbell. The award image is based on one of Steven’s paintings from the Hunt series which won Steven his Bram Stoker award at his 1982 Degree Show.

Professor Seona Reid, Director of The Glasgow School of Art, said: ““This year we have produced a wealth of highly talented graduating students across the school. Outstanding work has been commended by established prizes and new awards across Architecture, Research, Product Design Engineering and Fine Art.

“Work commended has ranged from Claire Paterson who was selected for the inaugural ‘Steven Campbell Hunt Medal’ for her painting portfolio to Visual Communication student James Houston, who as winner of the established Newbery Medal is the top student of the 2008 graduating year.  Our graduating students have once again proved that The Glasgow School of Art consistently produces first class artists, designers and architects who excel within their chosen creative disciplines.”
