BBC Radio Scotland suffers dip in listener figures, according to RAJARs

BBC Radio Scotland has suffered a near eight per cent year-on-year dip in the number of adults it is reaching, according to the latest listener figures.

Says audit body, RAJAR, the station was, on average, listened to for a minimum five minutes per week – defined as ‘reach’ – by 928,000 adults during the first three months of last year – down 5.9 per cent from the average 986,000 during the final quarter of this year and down 7.9 per cent from the average 1,008,000 this time last year.

It is believed that one of the reasons for the fall in listenership might have been the short-lived involvement of Scottish football clubs in European football this season – which BBC Radio Scotland has the broadcasting rights for.

BBC Radio Scotland’s share of its available audience dropped from 9.1 per cent during the final quarter of last year to 7.6 per cent during the first quarter of this year.

This time last year, Rangers FC was still progressing strongly in the UEFA Cup.

‘Share’ is the total listening time (as a percentage) accounted for by a station in its area in an average week.
