Advice issued to help comms officers better handle FoI requests

COMMUNICATIONS officers whose organisations receive requests from, among others, the media, under Freedom of Information legislation, have been offered advice on how they might better handle them.

The top tips have been produced by the Cheshire-based Informational Commissioner Office. In a statement issued by the ICO, the advice was put together “after speaking to communications professionals in a range of public authorities about how freedom of information has changed the way organisations approach PR”.

The advice – found here – includes the suggestion to co-ordinate freedom of information work with media enquiries, Parliamentary Questions and blog monitoring – because they often cover similar issues at the same time.
