Chancellor lined up as Press Fund Lunch speaker

THE Chancellor, Gordon Brown, is to be the main speaker at at a lunch in Glasgow early next month, to raise funds for the Journalists’ Charity.

It’s quite a coup for the charity – aka the Press Fund – to have secured Brown as the main speaker at its lunch, taking place on the sixth. That same day, the campaigns for the Scottish Parliament election will be in full swing.

The event, being organised by the Glasgow and west of Scotland branch of the Journalists’ Charity, also marks the end of the branch presidency for Sunday Mail editor, Allan Rennie.

But Brown might do well to remember the fate of former Tory leader, Michael Howard, when he addressed a Press Fund lunch a couple of years ago.

Leaving his cheerful self in the ‘green room’, he went into political overdrive during his speech.

It didn’t go down terribly well.
