Scottish Press Awards – part one: Daily Record crowned ‘Scottish newspaper of the year’

FOR the second year in succession, the Daily Record has been named the ‘Scottish newspaper of the year’.

The accolade, presented at last night’s Scottish Press Awards, was the culmination of the paper taking various other awards, including for ‘Journalist team of the year’ and ‘Front page of the year’.

And the night also proved to be something of a repeat performance for the Sunday Herald’s Scottish political editor, Paul Hutcheon, who followed up his ‘Journalist of the year’ victory two years ago by taking the title once again.

The awards – the 29th, and taking place in Glasgow – also saw the Record’s ‘agony aunt’, Joan Burnie, receive a ‘Lifetime achievement’ award.

The 22 categories were open to journalists and photographers working for newspapers and magazines published in Scotland and Scotland-based journalists and photographers writing exclusively on Scottish affairs for non-Scottish publications.

There were 370 entries this year, with ‘Journalist team of year’, ‘News photographer of the year’ and ‘Cartoonist of the year’ attracting a record number of entries.

Two new categories were added to this year’s awards: ‘Sports scoop of the year’ and ‘Magazine writer of the year’.
