Newsquest Action is Scotland’s ‘Wapping’

As someone with recent involvement with Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs I can assure the Herald group publishers, Newsquest, and their American owners, that any firm, perhaps especially a media company, which tries to use Britain’s redundancy laws as a cost-cutting measure could find itself in an extremely serious situation, facing massive tax and employment tribunal payouts.

I strongly believe that HMRC will simply not allow a company to cut costs – for that is what this is all about – by getting around problems via the redundancy laws. There is a simple reason for that. HMRC’s task under the present Government is to maximise tax income, and it stands to reason that a company which cuts its overall costs by the ‘back door’ of redundancy is reducing the overall tax and national insurance ‘take’ both in the short and long term.
