Freelance budgets cut at Express group

THE budget for freelance content and casual production staff at the Express titles in Scotland has been cut.

As part of an UK-wide move, allmediascotland.com understands that between ten and 15 per cent is to be trimmed from the budget used by Express Newspapers’ Scottish division – comprising four titles – to commission freelances. While there will be less ‘room to hire’ freelances, freelance rates and contracts will remain unaffected.

However, for some freelancers, the impact will be bigger than ten-to-15 per cent, especially if they were, last year, part of a push to up the Scottish content in the paper, which took spending beyond the set budget.

It’s also believed that a pay review, due around this time of the year, has been pushed back, to summer.
