Pirate radio tribute being broadcast by BBC

A TRIBUTE to the pirate radio station that went by the name ‘Radio Scotland’ is taking place today on BBC Radio Scotland – to sound like it would have done in the mid-1960s, when it was operating, from a ship.

The recreation is being hosted by Tony Currie, a continuity announcer on BBC Radio Scotland and the first DJ to broadcast on Radio Clyde – in 1973.

He says he almost landed himself a job on ‘Radio Scotland’ but was pipped by the station being closed following the Marine Offences Act of 1967.

During vacations during the mid-1990s, he was able to be “cook, chief newsreader and breakfast jock” on a legal ship-based radio station, Radio North Sea International.

Pirate Radio Scotland is being broadcast between 11am and 11.30am on 810MW.
