Sun Extends Sales Lead Over the Record

The Scottish Sun has slightly extended a record-breaking sales gap over its rival, the Daily Record.

Say the August ABCs, the gap – as measured by Average Net Circulation – between the Scottish Sun and its nearest rival, the Daily Record, was 53,818. In July, it was 53,124; in June, it was 50,493; and in May, it was 45,208.

In July, the Scottish Sun’s average daily sale was 368,097 (compared to 361,578 in July), as opposed to the Daily Record’s 314,279 (compared to 308,454 in July).

Two months ago, the Scottish Sun had celebrated its biggest-ever average sales lead over the Daily Record, insodoing creating – for the first time since it overtook the Record to become Scotland’s biggest-selling daily newspaper – a 50,000-plus divide between the two titles.

Meanwhile, the average for the country’s biggest-selling newspaper, the Sunday Mail, was 389,475. In July, it was 376,905; in June, it was 377,225; and in May, it was 388,252.

Average Net Circulation figures include free give-aways.

Reflecting when people go on holiday, there was an across-the-board increase in newspaper sales in Scotland, between July and last month – with Scotland on Sunday among those enjoying the biggest leap in circulation.
