Adams Taking Sabbatical from Herald to Join VSO

The Journalist of the Year at this year's Scottish Press Awards is taking a sabbatical to undertake a year of voluntary work in Ghana, starting next month.

Lucy Adams, who is chief reporter at The Herald and also took the Reporter of the Year prize at the awards, leaves the paper on Thursday, to join up with Voluntary Service Overseas.

She and her husband, Andy – who is a transport planner – are headed for Ghana, with Lucy assisting the government's department for community development, in a advocacy and fundraising role.

The 34 year-old intends to return to The Herald in September next year. She has had a long-standing interest in Africa, including human rights issues there. Her husband is to work on a Fair Trade cocoa project.

She'll be blogging about her experiences on lucyandy.blogspot.com
