A FORMER travel editor for the Sunday Express is preparing to tread the boards at this year’s Edinburgh Festival – 60 years after the last time.
Iain Crawford, who has also worked as a wine and film critic for The Evening Standard and been a publicity chief for the festival (between 1972-81), will be performing the poem, The Long Angry Search for Peace.
Penned by East Lothian-based Crawford himself, the poem tells of the hardship and horrors of sea warfare during World War II and was inspired by a Ministry of Defence initiative to take war veterans back to areas where they fought so that they might recall their memories for younger generations.
This will be Iain’s second on-stage appearance at the festival in six decades. In the festival’s first year, in 1947, he played Banquo in a production of Macbeth, but appeared only on Thursdays as a stand-in for another actor who could not get the day off work.
The Long Angry Search for Peace is on at 2.45pm between Sunday and Wednesday, at the Roxy Art House, Roxburgh Place, in the capital.
