NUJ reports launch of pay talks

PAU talks have got under way this week between the National Union of Journalists and two major newspaper employers, the union has announced.

Meetings have taken place with the publishers of both The Herald (Newsquest) and The Scotsman (Johnston Press) newspapers and union officials have said they are not prepared to countenance another pay freeze.

Meanwhile, the Daily Record & Sunday Mail NUJ chapel committee meet tomorrow to discuss its proposed pay claim, which is expected to target anomalies in salary scales.

Says NUJ Scottish Secretary, Paul Holleran:”Last year was a hard one for the whole industry and we recognised that, taking a hit on pay and jobs in most places. This has meant an increase in workload and responsibility for most of our members and we are explaining our views to the various management teams, that we expect them to come up with a deal this time around.”

Holleran added that most of the Scottish employers have introduced new technology with greater skills and flexibility required from the workforce.
