The Media in the Press 26.2.10

Second-year Journalism student, Sian Lower, from Edinburgh Napier University, looks at the media stories making today’s headlines.

The BBC is being criticised today due to alleged excessive spending. Phil Miller, The Herald’s arts correspondent, writes on page 11: “BBS Scotland should not have used £1 million in emergency funds to pay for ‘enhancements and additions’ to its £188 million headquarters in Glasgow, a critical new report has found. Yesterday the BBC Trust said licence fee payers had been let down by the Corporation’s ‘serious mistakes’ in building three new sets of headquarters at a cost of £2billion.”

The Scottish Daily Mail’s TV correspondent, Paul Revoir, adds: “The BBC’s state-of-the-art Scottish headquarters soared £60 million over its original budget, a damning report revealed yesterday.”

Vicky Shaw of The Scotsman also reports on the expenditure (page 22): “The governing body published an independent report prepared by the National Audit Office (NAO) on the BBC’s management of three major projects – the refurbishment and redevelopment of Broadcasting House in London, the construction of Pacific Quay in Glasgow and the corporation’s forthcoming move to Salford Quays in Greater Manchester.”

John Plunkett of The Guardian (page 14) continues: “It also had to spend a further £55m keeping staff in other buildings longer than expected because of the delay in the Broadcasting House redevelopment.”

STV is also receives frequent mentions in today’s press. On page 6 of the Scottish Daily Express, Stephen Wilkie writes: “Struggling broadcaster STV has seen profits more than halved in the last year. But the station is still £5.5 million in the black despite losing advertising revenue and seeing ratings fall after dropping a string of network programmes.”

Georgina Reid – The Scottish Sun’s Scottish TV editor – says, on page 30: “STV is set to launch a new court action against ITV over spin-off shows like The Xtra Factor.”

In other news, Peter Ranscombe of The Scotsman writes on page 3 of the business section: “Bigmouthmedia, the Edinburgh-based website marketing agency, yesterday unveiled plans to merge with Netherlands-listed Lost Boys International (LBI) to create ‘Europe’s largest search engine marketing specialist’.”

Also today: ”Online music store iTunes has passed the 10 billion downloads mark.” – The Herald, page 2.
