Rumsby scores highly among rugby writers

RARELY has an over-par round golf attracted such respect. But Scottish Press Association sports journalist, Ben Rumsby, attracted just that, with a round that happened only to be, er….137 over par.

Playing the tough East Course at Dalmahoy, just outside Edinburgh, Rumsby was yesterday taking part in the annual golf outing of the Scottish Rugby Writers Club. The course is par 73, but Rumsby – who has never played a round of golf before – managed to clock up 210, including a 20 on the fifth hole.

Said one admiring colleague: “Had it been me, I’d have made up scores. But Ben was scrupulous.”

He’s off tomorrow, to report the French Open tennis tournament, nursing – it is understood – only one regret: that he was unable to fully enjoy the golf buggy he was using during yesterday’s round. After all, he was only ever able to drive it a matter of a few yards at a time.
