Cover accolade for The Beano

THE Beano comic has taken a top prize at awards celebrating the UK’s best magazine covers.

At the annual Maggie awards, an issue from October was chosen as Best Youth Cover.

To win, the DC Thomson-published title had to see off stiff competition from BBC Doctor Who Adventures, Dinomite!, Fantastic Funworld and BBC CBeebies Art.

Mike Stirling, deputy head of children’s entertainment at DC Thomson told allmediascotland: “Dennis, Gnasher and the Beano team would like to thank the judges – they can relax as Dennis has promised they’re safe from his catapult – and all the readers who voted for us. There were some really strong nominations but it just proves that, even after 72 years, the Beano is still everyone’s favourite comic.”

Chosen by the public via an online poll, the Beano was one of nine category winners. Men’s fashion magazine, GQ, proved to be the big winner, collecting the top prize of Overall Winner in addition to picking up the best Fashion cover.

Dundee publisher, DC Thomson, has yet to declare where the Beano will be printed in future, following the announcement earlier this month of plans to close a plant in the city’s Guthrie Street where the children’s comic is produced.

Elsewhere, The Big Issue in Scotland magazine, which was nominated in the Lifestyle category, lost out to household name, FHM.
