Entries Deadline Looms for New Photography Award

Entries for a new photography awards scheme launched by the UK Picture Editors' Guild – to recognise the best press photos in the country – have to be in by this Saturday.

Guild members set up the contest to offer a nationwide challenge to press photographers, which they felt had been lacking.

The competition will be hosted on a dedicated website with seven categories for professional photographers, including sport, news and business pictures.

It also includes an eighth category for citizen photographers – open to members of the public who witness a news event.

One of the three founders of the Guild was Stewart Boyd, when he was picture editor of The Scotsman.

The Guild has been established for 30 years and comprises picture editors from the national press, regional newspapers, international press agencies and domestic photo agencies.

The winners will be announced on September 21, in London, with the overall winner pocketing £1000 and category winners £500.

Entries are being accepted for pictures taken in the last 12 months, up to the 16th of this month.
