New look for Times Educational Supplement Scotland

THE education title, the Times Educational Supplement Scotland, is to have a new look, from tomorrow.

Moving from a tabloid-size newspaper to a full-colour, 48-page glossy magazine, a little bigger than the New Statesman, the new look has – says editor, Gillian Macdonald – been developed “in partnership” with its teacher readership.

Says a statement issued to announce the new look, tomorrow’s edition “includes an in-depth jobs investigation – where teachers are likeliest to find vacancies, where the subject shortages are and where good retirement deals can be found”.

It continues: “There is also a contribution from former First Minister Jack McConnell who attacks ‘the lack of priority for education’ from the SNP Government. To provide political balance, and in a lighter vein, First Minister, Alex Salmond, opens a new regular series on ‘My Best Teacher’, revealing that he was strapped five times which was ‘richly deserved’.”

TESS has been going for 46 years. It is published weekly, on a Friday. The new design is the work of Matthew Ball.

Macdonald is quoted, saying: “I am delighted to announce the launch of the new TESS and am excited about the radical changes we have introduced to ensure the publication continues to serve the needs of the Scottish teaching workforce. The new magazine has been developed in partnership with teachers to ensure that TESS remains the journal for busy teaching professionals in Scotland.”
