Reid and Nelson Miss out on Columnist of the Year Title to Parris

Scots columnists, Melanie Reid and Fraser Nelson, were to miss out this evening at the British Press Awards – with the Columnist of the Year title they were nominated for going, instead, to Matthew Parris.

Reid – whose 'Spinal Column' for The Times tracks her recovery from a broken neck and back 12 months ago – was joined by Nelson among seven writers nominated for the title. Nelson, editor of The Spectator magazine, was nominated for his column in the News of the World. Parris writes for The Times.

Meanwhile, fellow Scot, Gordon Smart of The Sun, lost out to Stephen Moyes, of the News of the World, in the battle for the Showbiz Reporter of the Year prize.

The Guardian was chosen as Newspaper of the Year.
