Bargeton Named New Deputy Editor at The Courier

The political editor of regional morning, The Courier, Dundee, has been appointed deputy editor.

Steve Bargeton has taken over from Jim Allison who is taking early retirement and leaves on Friday.

Donald Martin, editor-in-chief of the DC. Thomson newspaper stable in Dundee is expected to reveal the name of the new editor of the newspaper shortly. The post has been vacant since Bill Hutcheon retired earlier this year.

Bargeton has been replaced as political editor by David Clegg.

In announcing his promotion, Clegg reports in his weekly round-up column in the newspaper: “Of course, politics being politics, my pals at Holyrood couldn’t let the moment pass without a few jokes at my expense.

“The best gag came from a Tory staffer, who marched into my office, extended his hand and deadpanned: “Well done on the appointment. Cleggs rarely make it past deputy!”

Meanwhile, succeeding Graeme Dey as sports editor is the paper's Eric Nicolson. Dey became a SNP MSP during last month's Scottish Parliament elections. Nicolson joins from publisher, DC Thomson's Perth office.

Graham Huband has moved from sister title, the Evening Telegraph, where he was crime correspondent, to the new post of business editor.
