Jobs Resolution Results in Toast to Management

Senior management at The Herald newspaper – along with sister titles, the Evening Times and the Sunday Herald – have been praised for helping save two imager jobs, plus avoid another two being made subject to compulsory redundancy.

In a memo issued to staff by the Gordon Thomson, the National Union of Journalists' Father of Chapel at the papers, “very meaningful negotations” meant that original plans by the company to keep one imager post and axe four ended up three posts being kept (albeit each on reduced hours) and Ronnie McKechnie and Chris Pech opting to take voluntary redundancy.

Writes Thomson: “Although we regret losing both colleagues, chapel officials want to put on record their gratitude to [Herald editor] Jonathan Russell and the management team for their willingness to explore a series of alternatives put forward by the union side. Our thanks also go to the remaining imagers who have all had to make personal sacrifices to help save posts.

“The outcome is a vivid demonstration of what can be achieved when all sides pull together.”
