Scotsman Column Praises 'Old School' Approach of US Journalist

An US journalist has been praised in today's Scotsman newspaper for his 'old school' approach to reporting from the Middle East.

Writes Jennifer O'Mahony, Anthony Shadid, Middle East correspondent for The New York Times, “epitomised the exact opposite of what all young journalists are told is important”, eschewing tweeting, shooting video and promoting himself as a brand.

Adds O'Mahony, in The Scotsman's Scottish Perspective column: “New media can only ever work alongside, rather than replace, the core skills of bearing witness, listening and accurately reporting the truth.”

Last week, Shadid died while leaving Syria, after suffering a fatal asthma attack, apparently brought on by an allergy to horses.
