THE First Minister, Alex Salmond, is reportedly being urged to launch an investigation into the prosecution of former MSP, Tommy Sheridan, who spent a year in prison after being found guilty of perjuring himself during a case against the new closed News of the World newspaper.
Reports Andrew Whittaker, in today’s Scotsman: “Labour MP Tom Watson, who helped uncover the News of the World phone hacking scandal, is to write to Mr Salmond asking him to order the Scottish Government’s law officers to investigate why the case against Mr Sheridan came to court.”
At the end of 2010, Sheridan was found guilty of having perjured himself during a successful defamation trial against the News of the World which, last year, was closed down amid claims of phone-hacking. He was sentenced to three years in prison.
Watson is quoted, as saying: ““It’s now absolutely certain that the judgment is unsound and if Alex Salmond had a shred of decency he would use all the power he has to ensure that this is urgently dealt with.”
