The Media in Figures: Scots circulations of national newspapers

THE i newspaper has enjoyed a year-on-year increase in its average daily sale in Scotland.

According to the Audit Bureau of Circulation, the paper’s average sale in Scotland was 18,418 during January last year and an average 18,928 last month – representing a 2.8 per cent increase, year-on-year.

But the increase was the exception to the rule.

In summary, the daily newspapers figures concern sales in Scotland between January last year and last month and reveal the following:

Daily Mirror – 13.8 per cent drop = from 20,710 on average during January last year, to 17,848 last month;

Daily Record – 9.2 per cent drop = from 242,012 on average during January last year, to 219,514 last month;

Daily Star of Scotland – 11.4 per cent drop = 52,069 to 46,154;

The Scottish Sun – 8.4 per cent drop = 283,865 to 260,001;

Scottish Daily Express – 5.5 per cent drop = 55,436 to 52,394;

Scottish Daily Mail – 8.1 per cent drop = 103,611 to 95,237;

Daily Telegraph – 4.4 per cent drop = 18,587 to 17,761;

Financial Times – 11 per cent drop = 2,718 to 2,418;

The Guardian – 4.5 per cent drop = 11,066 to 10,565;

i – 2.8 per cent up = 18,418 to 18,928;

Independent – ten per cent drop = 3,119 to 2,807; and

The Times – 3.4 per cent drop = 18,618 to 17,985.

Meanwhile, the Sunday titles’ sales figures in Scotland were as follows:

Daily Star of Scotland – Sunday – 11.3 per cent down = 29,077 to 25,785;

The Scottish Sun – Sunday – 8.5 per cent down = 201,988 to 184,789;

Sunday Mail – 9.6 per cent down = 273,510 to 247,247;

Sunday Mirror – 14.3 per cent down = 20,442 to 17,524;

The People – 18.9 per cent down = 11,261 to 9,129;

Scottish Sunday Express – five per cent down = 31,948 to 30,340;

The Sunday Post – 7.5 per cent drop = 174,115 to 161,099;

Scottish Mail on Sunday – 8.2 per cent down = 90,458 to 83,079;

Independent on Sunday – 9.5 per cent down = 5,644 to 5,105;

The Observer – 2.7 per cent down = 14,521 to 14,124;

Sunday Telegraph – two per cent down = 16,194 to 15,869; and

Sunday Times – 7.7 per cent down = 48,473 to 44,746.
