The Media in Figures: Sales in Scotland of national newspapers

ACCORDING to the Audit Bureau of Circulations, with the exception of the Scottish edition of The Sunday Times, every daily and Sunday national newspaper widely available in Scotland experienced a drop in their sales in the country, between May last year and last month.

The Sunday Times saw its year-on-year sales in Scotland rise by 0.14 per cent, from an average 46,556 during May last year to an average 46,620 last month.

In summary, the daily newspapers figures concern sales in Scotland between May last year and last month and reveal the following:

Daily Mirror – 12.5 per cent drop = from 19,982 on average during May last year, to 17,489 last month;

Daily Record – 9.4 per cent drop = from 231,824 on average during May last year, to 210,118 last month;

Daily Star of Scotland – 12.5 per cent drop = 50,134 to 43,848;

The Scottish Sun – 8.6 per cent drop = 268,089 to 245,136;

Scottish Daily Express – 9.4 per cent drop = 54,891 to 49,747;

Scottish Daily Mail – 5.1 per cent drop = 98,058 to 93,090;

Daily Telegraph – 3.7 per cent drop = 18,619 to 17,933;

Financial Times – 9.7 per cent drop = 2,599 to 2,347;

The Guardian – 7.4 per cent drop = 10,952 to 10,146;

i – 3.7 per cent drop = 19,230 to 18,516;

Independent – 16.9 per cent drop = 3,166 to 2,631; and

The Times – 2.1 per cent drop = 18,931 to 18,535.

Meanwhile, the Sunday titles’ sales figures in Scotland were as follows:

Daily Star of Scotland – Sunday – 16.8 per cent down = 27,541 to 22,921;

The Scottish Sun – Sunday – 8.5 per cent down = 192,997 to 176,522;

Sunday Mail – 10.4 per cent down = 262,345 to 234,944;

Sunday Mirror – 20.1 per cent down = 20,292 to 16,221;

The People – 10.8 per cent down = 10,408 to 9,287;

Scottish Mail on Sunday – 7.1 per cent down = 88,593 to 82,337;

Scottish Sunday Express – 13 per cent down = 32,232 to 28,041;

The Sunday Post – 10.8 per cent drop = 167,331 to 149,215;

Independent on Sunday – 7.1 per cent down = 5,454 to 5,068;

The Observer – 7.6 per cent down = 14,801 to 13,675;

Sunday Telegraph – 3.8 per cent down = 16,292 to 15,678; and

Sunday Times – 0.14 per cent up = 46,556 to 46,620.
