The Media in Figures: Sales in Scotland of national newspapers

WITH the exception of The Independent on Sunday, every daily and Sunday national newspaper widely available in Scotland experienced a drop in their sales in the country, between July last year and last month.

Says the Audit Bureau of Circulations, The Independent on Sunday saw its year-on-year sales in Scotland figure increase by 3.5 per cent, from an average 5,350 during July last year to an average 5,539 last month.

In summary, the daily newspapers figures concern sales in Scotland between July last year and last month and reveal the following:

Daily Mirror – 13 per cent drop = from 19,803 on average during July last year, to 17,221 last month;

Daily Record – ten per cent drop = from 223,762 on average during July last year, to 201,298 last month;

Daily Star of Scotland – 16.8 per cent drop = 49,792 to 41,401;

The Scottish Sun – 8.4 per cent drop = 260,528 to 238,493;

Scottish Daily Express – 12.4 per cent drop = 54,769 to 47,969;

Scottish Daily Mail – five per cent drop = 96,038 to 91,216;

Daily Telegraph – 6.8 per cent drop = 19,032 to 17,746;

Financial Times – 11.1 per cent drop = 2,475 to 2,200;

The Guardian – 6.8 per cent drop = 10,323 to 9,621;

i – five per cent drop = 18,765 to 17,820;

Independent – 10.8 per cent drop = 3,005 to 2,680; and

The Times – 1.8 per cent drop = 18,938 to 18,600.

Meanwhile, the Sunday titles’ sales figures in Scotland were as follows:

Daily Star of Scotland – Sunday – 20.2 per cent down = 28,344 to 23,626;

The Scottish Sun – Sunday – 10.5 per cent down = 192,454 to 172,263;

Sunday Mail – 12.2 per cent down = 253,832 to 222,793;

Sunday Mirror – 23.6 per cent down = 20,695 to 15,808;

The People – 11.4 per cent down = 10,290 to 9,117;

Scottish Mail on Sunday – 6.2 per cent down = 85,872 to 80,524;

Scottish Sunday Express – 16.5 per cent down = 32,822 to 27,399;

The Sunday Post – 12.4 per cent drop = 163,301 to 143,070;

Independent on Sunday – 3.5 per cent up = 5,350 to 5,539;

The Observer – 7.7 per cent down = 13,798 to 12,731;

Sunday Telegraph – 6.8 per cent down = 16,424 to 15,301; and

Sunday Times – 3.1 per cent down = 44,877 to 43,500.
