Your Noon Briefing: Newspaper digital ad teams join forces, Edinburgh NUJ branches, etc

BEGINS pressgazette.co.uk: “More than 800 regional newspaper websites have teamed up to launch a combined digital advertising platform called 1XL.

“It is a collaboration between three of the top four local newspaper publishers – Johnston Press [publisher of The Scotsman and several Scots local newspapers], Local World and Newsquest [publisher of The Herald] – and a number of independent local media businesses. Trinity Mirror does not appear to be involved in the project.

“Mediaforce Group will sell national advertising for 1XL which claims to provide a combined reach of 17.5 million monthly unique website users.”

And begins the announcement of the initiative on the website of Johnston Press: “Johnston Press, a leading UK-based local media group, is delighted to announce today the launch of an innovative digital advertising platform, 1XL, together with Local World, Newsquest, and the majority of the UK’s independent local media businesses.”

It continues: “The platform will, for the first time, provide national brands with local media advertising coverage across the UK via a single sales point.  Bringing together over 800 websites, 1XL will enable advertisers to reach over 17.5m monthly unique users nationwide, more monthly unique users than any single commercial UK national news media website and similar in scale to digital advertising platforms such as AOL and MSN.”

BEGINS the website, radiotoday.co.uk: “Will Jackson, managing director of the Radio Independents Group, today called for the BBC to take several key steps to meet the need to better represent the UK nations and regions on its network radio services.

“Speaking at the Nations & Regions Media conference in Salford, Will called for the BBC to deliver three key proposals to make sure the UK as a whole is better represented.”

BEGINS The Guardian: “Alex Salmond [who spent his last day yesterday as First Minister] has been labelled a ‘paranoid loser’ by a former BBC chairman, following the former Scottish National party leader’s criticismof the corporation’s coverage of the Scottish independence referendum.

“Sir Christopher Bland urged the BBC to mount a robust defence of its journalism, after Salmond compared the corporation’s independence referendum coverage to a ‘state broadcaster’ screening propaganda.”

A PROPOSAL to merge two Edinburgh branches of the National Union of Journalists has been rejected by one of the branches, at least for a year.

The Edinburgh Freelance branch of the NUJ has decided to review the proposal in 12 months’ time, resolving to build on, in the meantime, already strong links with the union’s Edinburgh & District branch.

The freelance branch met on Monday, while the Edinburgh & District the week before, where it made no decision pending what its sister branch might opt for.
