The Media in Figures: National newspaper sales in Scotland

THE Independent, The Times and The Independent on Sunday newspapers have each seen their latest year-on-year sales figures in Scotland rise.

Circulation numbers released on Friday by the newspapers auditing body, ABC, concern average sales during January last year and those from last month.

And they show The Independent up 6.3 per cent, year-on-year, with an average sale in Scotland last month of 2,985, compared with 2,807 12 months previously.

The Times, meanwhile, saw an average rise of 2.4 per cent, year-on-year, from 17,985 to 18,422.

And The Independent on Sunday’s year-on-year was 10.1 per cent, from 5,105 to 5,625.

In summary, ABC figures read, as follows:

Daily Mirror – 11.3 per cent drop = from 17,848 on average during January last year, to 15,828 last month;

Daily Record – 11 per cent drop = from 219,514 on average during January last year, to 195,390 last month;

Daily Star of Scotland – 16.2 per cent drop = 46,154 to 38,665;

The Scottish Sun – 10.6 per cent drop = 260,001 to 232,448;

Scottish Daily Express – 13.1 per cent drop = 52,394 to 45,522;

Scottish Daily Mail – 3.9 per cent drop = 95,237 to 91,538;

Daily Telegraph – 10.5 per cent drop = 17,761 to 15,901;

Financial Times – 8.5 per cent drop = 2,418 to 2,213;

The Guardian – 10.7 per cent drop = 10,565 to 9,435;

i – 10.6 per cent drop = 18,928 to 16,931;

Independent – 6.3 per cent up = 2,807 to 2,985; and

The Times – 2.4 per cent up = 17,985 to 18,422.

Meanwhile, the Sunday titles’ sales figures in Scotland were as follows:

Daily Star of Scotland – Sunday – 19.5 per cent down = 25,785 to 20,764;

The Scottish Sun – Sunday – 10.6 per cent down = 184,789 to 165,283;

Sunday Mail – 12.8 per cent down = 247,247 to 215,696;

Sunday Mirror – 6.7 per cent down = 17,524 to 16,352;

The People – 8.7 per cent down = 9,129 to 8,332;

Scottish Mail on Sunday – six per cent down = 83,079 to 78,065;

Scottish Sunday Express – 13.7 per cent down = 30,340 to 26,194;

The Sunday Post – 13.6 per cent down = 161,099 to 139,205;

Independent on Sunday – 10.1 per cent up = 5,105 to 5,625;

The Observer – 0.8 per cent down = 14,124 to 14,018;

Sunday Telegraph – 11.7 per cent down = 15,869 to 14,018; and

Sunday Times – three per cent down = 44,746 to 43,407.
