A LONG-established freelance journalist is having her first play performed next week.
Heather MacLeod’s ‘Long Player’ is being staged from next Monday as part of the well-known ‘A Play, a Pie and a Pint’ theatre series at Glasgow venue, Oran Mor.
The week-long run takes place each lunchtime and the ticket price includes a pie and, if so desired, a pint.
A journalist and broadcaster for 20 years, including four years as property writer on The Herald, MacLeod started script writing after she and Herald diarist, Ken Smith, attended an Introduction to Screenwriting course run by Scottish film director, Eleanor Yule.
She has been freelance for five years, and her credits include BBC Homes, the Mail on Sunday, Scottish Field and the Herald’s Saturday magazine.
Says MacLeod: “Ken went on to write a script for a short film which was shown at the GFT [Glasgow Film Theatre], but I was a bit more gobby and wrote this hour- long script, in between day jobs.
“Script writing provided a welcome respite from phrases such as ‘super-luxe duplex apartment’.
“I was inspired to write if after donating my vinyl collection to Oxfam. Now we are having to buy some of it back for props, although some are proving impossible to find.”
The play stars Tamara Kennedy, Dave Anderson and Samantha Shields and is directed by Dave Anderson and Jennifer Hainey, and produced by David MacLennan.
