COPIES of the Daily Record and its sister title, the Sunday Mail, may soon be no longer be available on newsstands in the Republic of Ireland, following dramatic dips in sales.
On the MediaWeek website, a spokesperson for publishers, Trinity Mirror, is reported saying the company is “reviewing the publishing strategy of the Daily Record and Sunday Mail in the Republic of Ireland”.
Adds the website, the circulation of the Daily Record fell 71.1 per cent in September compared to August and 83.2 per cent compared to 12 months previously, to 501 copies. The circulation of the Sunday Mail, meanwhile, fell 78 per cent month-on-month and 88.5 per cent year-on-year, to 920 copies. In both instances, the large percentage changes are down to the low starting points.
It is, however, entirely conceivable that the papers will seek to improve their editorial offering and distribution so that they become more of a presence in the Republic rather than less. The performances of the Old Firm football clubs of Celtic and Rangers are known to have a big impact on sales.
Says MediaWeek: “Pulling the newspapers out of Ireland is understood to be one of the options, as is reducing the number of copies that are distributed in the country.”
