Homes & Interiors Scotland among risers in mag sales audit

THE Scots glossy magazine, Homes and Interiors Scotland, is among the winners in the latest circulation report for magazines throughout the UK.

Says the Audit Bureau of Circulation, in what is a six-monthly review of magazine sales, the Peebles Media group-owned monthly title sold an average 10,953 copies in December last year, up 11.7 per cent on its June 2009 figure of 9,802 and up 3.8 per cent on its December 2008 one of 10,553.

Missing from the today’s report were some well-known Scottish titles such as The List and No.1.

Across the UK, well over one billion magazines were bought last year, with more than 85 per cent of UK adults buying at least one title during the course of 2009.

In particular, ‘active lifestyle’ publications performed well. The athletics sector grew 38.3 per cent in the second half of 2009 compared with the same period in 2008. Meanwhile, the camping, walking and climbing sector rose by 11.5 per cent in the second half of 2009 compared with the same period in 2008. Circulation in the cycling sector rose 11.8 per cent in the second half of 2009 compared with the same period in 2008.

The women’s sector recovered in the second half of the year. Circulations of women’s lifestyle/fashion magazines rose 4.7 per cent in the second half of 2009 compared with the same period in 2008 and circulations for women’s weeklies went up 2.9 per cent in the second half of last year compared with the same period in 2008.

Business and finance also continued to do well across the UK, with the sector posting circulation growth of 5.7 per cent in the second half of 2009 compared with the same period in 2008.

Despite the recession, sales of consumer magazines throughout the UK fell by just 1.3 per cent in the second half of 2009 compared to the same period in 2008.

Says the chief executive of the Periodical Publishers Association, Barry McIlheney: “Readers have a unique relationship with their magazines. In an increasingly cluttered world, magazines offer an oasis of private time.”
