Robertson a winner at student journalism awards

A REGULAR writer on allmediascotland.com has taken a top prize at awards celebrating the best of Scottish student journalism.

Alan Robertson – who regularly pens a summary of media news in the press for allmediascotland – is a student at Strathclyde University. And he emerged a winner in the Write Stuff Awards, for journalism students attending Scottish universities and colleges.

His prize – for an article about the closure of a theatre – came out top in the news category.

In the awards section for college students, Rosemary Lowne, from Cardonald College, took the titles in both the news and sports writing categories. Victoria Irvine took the prize in the entertainment category, while Stephanie Beechey took the prize in the feature writing section.

In the university students part of the awards ceremony, as well as Robertson’s win, there were victories for Kirsty Scott (sports writing), Gillian Provan (entertainment) and Lisa Stewart (feature writing).

Meanwhile, at another set of student journalism awards – open to all students throughout Scotland’s universities and colleges and run by The Herald newspaper – the student newspaper at Glasgow University emerged as the big winner.

The Glasgow University Guardian took the Student Journalist of the Year title, plus those for Best News Writer and Best Sports Writer. And its writer, Harry Tattersall Smith, took two of these awards: Student Journalist and Sport.
