Argles' Angle on Former PM Secures Top Photographer Award

A series of images of former Prime Minister, Gordon Brown – during this year's General Election campaign – has helped The Guardian's Martin Argles capture the title, Photographer of the Year, at the inaugural Picture Editors' Guild Awards.

Argles also won the Photo Essay category, while Getty Images' Chris Furlong was named News Photographer of the Year.

The Picture Editors' Guild Awards was set up to recognise outstanding photography across eight categories, including an award for citizen journalism.

Each category winner received £500, while the overall title came with a cheque for £1000. The awards ceremony was held on Tuesday evening.
