Watson Joins Speaker List at Glasgow-bound Editors' Conference

A former managing director of Trinity Mirror – the publisher of the Daily Record and Sunday Mail newspapers – has been lined up to speak to a conference of newspaper editors, taking place in Glasgow next month.

Ellis Watson, now chief executive of Simon Cowell’s Syco Entertainment, will speak at the Society of Editors' annual conference, in Glasgow between November 14 and 16. He is speaking specifically at the gala dinner.

Syco Entertainment is a joint venture between Simon Cowell and Sony Music Entertainment and Ellis is responsible for overseeing the expansion of Syco in the US and the preparation for the launch of The X Factor on Fox next year.

The keynote speaker at the conference is Alexander Lebedev, owner of the London Evening Standard, The Independent and the Independent on Sunday. His speech comes on the back of the launch of a 20p spin-off version of The Independent, called 'i' and targeting “readers and lapsed readers of quality newspapers”.

Other names on the bill include former Scotsman, Scottish Daily Mail and Daily Record editor, Martin Clarke, now publisher of MailOnline, which has remained the most visited national newspaper website since January.

The SoE president is Donald Martin, editor of Scotland’s Sunday Post and Weekly News and editor-in-chief of DC Newspapers Dundee. He is quoted, saying: “We will throw off the doom and gloom that has inhibited us in recent years and celebrate the vibrancy of the newspapers, broadcasting and the internet that informs and entertains readers, listeners and viewers.”
