McAlpine switching to the Daily Record

THE SNP MSP, Joan McAlpine, is joining the Daily Record as a columnist.

McAlpine, a former deputy editor of The Herald and former editor of the Sunday Times Scotland, is expected to be joining the paper within the next couple of weeks. She has recently been penning a weekly column for The Scotsman.

The move is further evidence of the Record adopting a more broad-minded approach towards the SNP and the upcoming referendum on independence, while still maintaining a Labour-supporting stance.

That the paper was giving the SNP a more generous hearing, while still supporting the Labour Party, became immediately evident when Allan Rennie was, in December, appointed editor-in-chief of the Record and its sister title, the Sunday Mail, as part of an overhaul of publishers, Trinity Mirror’s Scottish operation: as Media Scotland.

Said Rennie: “We are delighted to have Joan on board. She’ll give us an alternative voice. She knows the Record inside-out.”

McAlpine used to work for the Record, as a features writer and columnist. Her new column is to be titled, ‘Joan McAlpine, an independent woman’. It will be appearing on Tuesdays.

It is understood she will be penning two more columns for The Scotsman before moving across.
