THE MP who has been the biggest thorn in the side of the media mogul, Rupert Murdoch, has spoken of the personal toll his crusade has taken on him.
Tom Watson not only talks about how his broken marriage might have been saved but for his relentless pursuit and how he even feared for his life.
Two weeks ago, Murdoch appeared at the Leveson Inquiry into Press standards, set up following the closure in July of his News of the World newspaper amid allegations of phone-hacking. Last week, a Westminster Committee – that included Watson – described Murdoch as not a fit and proper person to run an international company.
Stephen McGinty, in a double-page spread in today’s Scotsman newspaper, quotes him as saying: “Maybe one day I will feel satisfied but I don’t at the moment, because I don’t think this is over. We are not at the end of it. People are aware there was wrongdoing and a cover-up but the people who did it have not been brought to justice and I think the full extent of what happened within that company – we still don’t know. Hopefully one day I can feel complete relief and move on.”
And Watson goes on to talk of the former MSP, Tommy Sheridan, who served a year in prison after being found guilty of perjuring himself during a successful defamation case against the News of the World.
