Celebration of The Beano comic to air on BBC Radio 4

THE iconic comic, The Beano – published by Dundee-based DC Thomson – is to be the subject of a BBC Radio 4 programme on Monday evening.

‘A Menace to Society’ will be presented by author, broadcaster and self-confessed lifelong fan of The Beano, Danny Wallace, and coincides with the comic’s upcoming 75th birthday celebrations this year.

In a DC Thomson media release, editor-in-chief, Mike Stirling, is quoted, as saying: “We’re all really excited about A Menace to Society and delighted that Danny is presenting the programme. He’s from Dundee – just like The Beano and Dennis – and is a huge fan of the comic.

“Danny scripted a special Dennis and Gnasher story, which appears in this week’s issue. He’s a brilliant comedian and author, but this was his toughest writing challenge to date.

“It’s on sale now so everyone can judge for themselves, but I think Danny’s done a brilliant job. There are free comic maker stickers too, for readers to create their own comic strip – so we’re giving everyone a chance to copy Danny and become a comic idol.”

Recently, it was announced Dundee City Council had approved a bid to call an unnamed street in Dundee’s west end ‘Bash Street’, in honour of characters in The Beano, which will be 75 in July.

A Menace to Society is being aired at 1600 on Monday.

Sister comic, The Dandy, celebrated its 75th birthday last year.
